Lou Downe

Director of Design and Service Standards

Government Digital Services

Lou is the Programme Director for Service and Design Standards at Government Digital Services (GDS), an 800-person team of designers embedded throughout the UK government.

Lou joined GDS in 2014 as the first service designer in government and has since established the discipline.

Voted one of the UK’s top creative leaders last year, Lou is a passionate believer in using design to solve complex, real-world problems. To that end, Lou has moved the practice of service design to be a more practical, technically-embedded profession.

Lou’s team is also passionate about the rights of LGBT in rural locations and last year organised the first pride parade in Alloa, Scotland.
